In short

There are two ways the NDIA can change your plan: a plan variation for small changes, and a plan reassessment for significant changes. Often you can also use the funding in your current plan flexibly, without needing a change at all.

Two ways to change

Variation or reassessment?

Plan variation (small change)

A small change to part of your current plan – for example updating your goals or your plan reassessment date, or adding funding when your needs change suddenly or for a crisis.

Plan reassessment (significant change)

Your plan is replaced with a new one. This happens when there’s a significant change in your life, or when your plan reassessment date is coming up.

Before asking for a change, check whether you can use the budgets in your current plan flexibly to meet your needs. If that works, your plan may not need to change.

How to ask

Asking for a change.

  • Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110
  • Talk to your Local Area Coordinator or support coordinator
  • Explain what has changed and how it affects your support needs
  • Include any reports or evidence that support your request

This page is general information only. NDIS rules can change, so always check the latest information at ndis.gov.au or call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

Changing providers

You can choose who supports you.

Under the NDIS you have choice and control over your providers. If you want to change providers, check your current service agreement for any notice period, then let your provider know. Your new provider will set up a new service agreement with you.
