In short

Social community access is NDIS-funded support to take part in social and community life. A support worker goes with you to activities you choose – like visiting friends, joining a club, going to the gym, shopping or volunteering – and helps you build the skills and confidence to do more on your own. Timeless Services VIC provides social community access across Melbourne.

Social Community Access guide

Social Community Access: what you need to know.

Clear answers to the questions people ask us most, so you can make an informed choice.

01

What community access can look like.

Community access is built around your week and your interests. One person might go to the gym on Tuesdays, meet friends at a café on Fridays and go to the footy on the weekend. Another might want to join a local Neighbourhood House class, visit the library or try parkrun.

Melbourne has plenty to do, and our support workers help you find activities near you, plan how to get there and join in with confidence.

02

Getting there: transport and travel.

Our support workers can drive you to and from activities in their car. Transport with a worker is usually charged per kilometre from your plan, as agreed in your service agreement before support starts.

If you’d like to travel more independently, we can practise trips on public transport with you until you feel confident. In Victoria, people with a severe and permanent disability may also be eligible for the Multi Purpose Taxi Program, which reduces taxi fares.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what you need. We’ll explain your options for social community access and check what your NDIS plan can cover.

03

Building skills, not just getting out.

Community access can be a way to build skills you’ll use for life: planning a trip, handling money, ordering at a café, or meeting new people. We set goals with you that link to your NDIS plan, and over time many people need less support for the same activity. That progress helps at your next plan reassessment.

04

One-to-one or in a group?

Social community access is usually one-to-one, so it’s built entirely around you. If you’d also like to meet people in a friendly group, see our group activities. Many people use both.

NDIS funding

How it’s funded.

Social and community access is usually funded from the Core Supports budget in your NDIS plan (assistance with social, economic and community participation). Some skill-building may be funded from your Capacity Building budget. We’ll go through what your plan covers with you before anything starts.

FAQ

Social Community Access: your questions.

Still not sure? Call us or send a message and we’ll help you work it out.

What is social and community access under the NDIS?

It’s support to take part in social, recreational and community activities. A support worker goes with you and helps you join in, build skills and grow your confidence.

How is this different from group activities?

Social community access is usually one-to-one and built around your own plans and interests. Our group activities are programs you do with other people in a small group.

Can a support worker help me use public transport?

Yes. We can plan trips with you and travel with you until you feel confident to do more on your own.

Do I pay for the activity itself?

Usually, yes. NDIS funding covers the support worker’s time. Costs like tickets, entry fees, food and drinks are generally paid by you.

Can a support worker drive me to activities?

Yes. Our support workers can drive you in their car. Transport is usually charged per kilometre from your plan, as agreed in your service agreement.

What activities can I do with community access?

Almost anything that links to your goals – sport, the gym, classes, clubs, volunteering, visiting friends, shopping and local events. You choose, and we help make it happen.

Will I always need the same amount of support?

Not always. Building skills and confidence is part of community access, so many people need less support over time for activities they know well.
