01
What a recovery coach does.
A recovery coach works alongside you to build the life you want, at your pace. Together you write a recovery plan based on your goals – maybe returning to study or work, reconnecting with family and friends, finding stable housing, or managing day-to-day life with more confidence.
Your coach helps you find and coordinate the supports you need across mental health, health, disability and community services, and helps you build skills and resilience for the ups and downs. Recovery isn’t always a straight line, and your coach is there through the setbacks as well as the progress.
02
Our recovery coaches.
Our recovery coaches bring a mix of qualifications and experience, including Certificate IV in Mental Health, allied health degrees, experience working in mental health and lived experience of mental health recovery.
Some people prefer a coach who has their own lived experience of recovery. If that matters to you, tell us and we’ll take it into account when we match you with a coach.
Not sure where to start?
Tell us what you need. We’ll explain your options for psychosocial recovery coaching and check what your NDIS plan can cover.
03
Recovery coaching or support coordination?
Both are usually funded from your Capacity Building budget, as separate supports. A recovery coach brings specialist knowledge of psychosocial disability, mental health and the mental health system. A support coordinator focuses on putting your whole NDIS plan into action. It’s possible to have both if your situation calls for it, but most people suit one or the other. We can help you work out which fits you.
04
Other mental health support in Victoria.
Recovery coaching doesn’t replace clinical care. In Victoria, adults aged 26 and over can also get free support from Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals – you don’t need a referral, a mental health care plan or a Medicare card. Visit the Better Health Channel to find one near you.
If you need help urgently, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time. In an emergency, call 000.
NDIS funding
How it’s funded.
Psychosocial recovery coaching is usually funded from the Capacity Building budget in your NDIS plan. It can sometimes be funded from Core Supports. We’ll check what your plan covers with you first. Check the latest at ndis.gov.au.

FAQ
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching: your questions.
Still not sure? Call us or send a message and we’ll help you work it out.
What is a psychosocial recovery coach?
A recovery coach supports NDIS participants with psychosocial disability to understand their plan, coordinate supports, build resilience and work towards their recovery goals.
Is recovery coaching the same as support coordination?
They are similar, but recovery coaching focuses on recovery and mental health. You usually have either a recovery coach or a support coordinator, not both – talk to us about which suits you. See support coordination.
Who can get psychosocial recovery coaching?
NDIS participants with psychosocial disability, where recovery coaching is included in their plan. The NDIA decides what is funded.
Does a recovery coach replace my doctor or psychologist?
No. A recovery coach works alongside your clinical team. They don’t provide treatment.
Can I choose a recovery coach with lived experience?
Yes. Some of our recovery coaches have lived experience of mental health recovery. Tell us if that matters to you and we’ll take it into account.
What qualifications do your recovery coaches have?
Our coaches bring a mix of qualifications and experience, including Certificate IV in Mental Health, allied health degrees, mental health work experience and lived experience of recovery.
Can recovery coaching continue if I go to hospital?
Usually, yes. You can generally keep your recovery coach while you’re in hospital, and they can help plan supports for when you leave.
