02

NDIS, Medicare or the health system: who pays?

Care that treats an illness or injury – for example a short course of wound care after surgery – is usually the job of the health system, through your GP, Medicare, hospital outreach or community health services.

The NDIS funds nursing when it is for a disability-related health need that is part of your daily life, such as ongoing continence or stoma care. Many people use both systems at different times.

If you’re not sure which applies, call us. We’ll talk through your situation and, if the NDIS is the right fit, check how it works with your plan.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what you need. We’ll explain your options for home nursing and check what your NDIS plan can cover.

03

Nurses and support workers, working together.

Some care needs a registered nurse – for example assessing a wound or working out the right continence aids. Other routine tasks can be done by trained support workers, following a plan the nurse has set up.

Planning nursing and day-to-day support together means fewer people coming through your door, and everyone works from the same plan. Ask us about combining nursing with personal care or complex care.

NDIS funding

How it’s funded.

When nursing care is related to your disability, it may be funded through your NDIS plan. Some health care is funded by Medicare or the health system instead. We’ll help you work out what applies to you before care starts.

FAQ

Home Nursing: your questions.

Still not sure? Call us or send a message and we’ll help you work it out.

Are your nurses registered?

Yes. Our home nursing services are delivered by registered nurses.

Which nursing services do you provide?

Wound care, continence nursing assessment and aids, stoma assessment, and medication management.

Do I need a referral?

You don’t need a referral to talk to us. Depending on the care you need, we may ask for information from your GP or specialist so we can plan your care safely.

Can nursing be combined with personal care?

Yes. We can coordinate nursing visits with personal care and other day-to-day support.

Is home nursing covered by my NDIS plan?

It depends on whether the care is related to your disability and what’s in your plan. Call us and we’ll talk it through with you.

What is the difference between a registered nurse and an enrolled nurse?

A registered nurse (RN) has a university degree and can assess your needs, plan your care and supervise others. An enrolled nurse (EN) usually has a diploma and works under the direction of a registered nurse. Our home nursing services are delivered by registered nurses.

Does the NDIS pay for continence aids?

Continence products can be funded from the Consumables part of your Core Supports budget when they relate to your disability. A continence assessment helps work out which products suit you.

Can a nurse teach my support workers or family?

Yes. Part of good nursing care is showing the people around you how to help safely, so care continues well between nursing visits.
